Leopard in Yala National Park Sri Lanka during morning safari

Yala National Park Safari: Leopards, Elephants & Practical Tips

April 20, 20259 min readExotic Holidays International

Yala National Park, located in the south-eastern corner of Sri Lanka, is the country's most visited wildlife reserve — and for good reason. Spanning 979 square kilometres of scrubland, lagoons, and rocky outcrops, Yala is home to 44 mammal species and 215 bird species. But the star attraction is the Sri Lankan leopard, and Yala has the highest concentration of leopards anywhere on Earth.

What Wildlife Will You See?

Beyond leopards, Yala is home to Sri Lankan elephants (300+ in the park), sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and water buffalo. Birdwatchers will spot painted storks, Sri Lankan junglefowl (the national bird), and migrant species from September to March.

  • Sri Lankan Leopard — best chances: February to July, early morning
  • Asian Elephant — seen year-round, especially near water holes
  • Sloth Bear — rare but possible, especially June to August
  • Crocodile — common around lagoons and rivers
  • Peacock — abundant throughout the park
  • Painted Stork — nesting colonies visible December to March

Best Time for a Yala Safari

The park is open year-round except during September, when Block I (the most popular area) closes for maintenance. The best months for leopard sightings are February to July, when the dry season forces animals to congregate around shrinking water sources. Early morning safaris (5:30 AM departure) offer the best wildlife activity and softer light for photography.

Practical Safari Tips

  • Duration: Half-day (4 hours) or full-day (8 hours) safaris available
  • Vehicle: Open-top 4x4 jeep with driver/tracker — arranged by your hotel or tour operator
  • What to bring: Binoculars, camera with zoom lens, sunscreen, hat, water
  • Clothing: Neutral colours (khaki, olive, brown) — avoid bright colours
  • Entry fee: $15 USD per person + vehicle charges (2025 rates)
  • Best strategy: Book the earliest morning slot and request an experienced tracker

Where to Stay Near Yala

The town of Tissamaharama (Tissa), 20 minutes from the park entrance, is the main base for Yala safaris. Options range from eco-lodges and tented camps to luxury boutique hotels. Staying close to the park entrance means you can be first in line for the morning game drive — a significant advantage for leopard sightings.

Combining Yala with Your Sri Lanka Itinerary

Yala fits naturally into a south coast itinerary. Most travellers visit Yala after Ella (2.5 hours) and before heading to the beaches of Tangalle or Mirissa. Allow at least one full day for the safari — two days if wildlife is a priority, as leopard sightings are never guaranteed on a single drive.
