After helping over 500 travellers plan their Sri Lanka holidays, we've refined the ideal 7-day route that balances culture, nature, and relaxation without feeling rushed. This itinerary follows the classic Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → South Coast loop that maximises your time on the island.
Day 1–2: Colombo to Sigiriya (Cultural Triangle)
Arrive in Colombo and transfer directly to Sigiriya (4 hours). Spend the afternoon exploring the Dambulla Cave Temple — five caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues and ancient murals. The next morning, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress at sunrise for the best experience, then visit the Minneriya area for an afternoon jeep safari.

Day 3: Sigiriya to Kandy
Drive to Kandy (3 hours) via the spice gardens of Matale. Afternoon visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist temple. In the evening, catch a traditional Kandyan dance performance, a vibrant display of drumming, fire-walking, and acrobatics.
Day 4: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (Tea Country)
Morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, then drive up to Nuwara Eliya (2.5 hours) through winding roads lined with tea plantations. Stop at a working tea factory to learn the process from leaf to cup. Nuwara Eliya, known as "Little England," sits at 1,868 metres and offers a refreshing change from the tropical heat.

Day 5: Scenic Train to Ella
Board the famous blue train from Nanu Oya to Ella — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The 6-hour ride winds through tea estates, over bridges spanning deep valleys, and past cascading waterfalls. In Ella, hike to Little Adam's Peak for sunset views or visit the Nine Arches Bridge.
Our Gem of Sri Lanka tour follows this exact 7-day route with private transport, handpicked hotels, and expert local guides — so you can focus on the experience, not the logistics.
View the Gem of Sri Lanka Tour →Day 6: Ella to the South Coast
Drive from Ella to the southern coast (4 hours), stopping at Ravana Falls and the Buduruwagala rock carvings en route. Arrive in Mirissa or Unawatuna by afternoon for your first taste of Sri Lanka's golden beaches. Spend the evening watching the sunset from the beach with a fresh king coconut in hand.
Day 7: Galle Fort & Departure
Morning exploration of Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Dutch colonial architecture, boutique shops, and ocean-view cafés. Then transfer to Colombo airport (2.5 hours via expressway) for your departure flight.
