Sigiriya — also known as Lion Rock — is a 5th-century rock fortress built by King Kashyapa I, perched atop a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres high. It's not just Sri Lanka's most visited heritage site; it's one of the most remarkable archaeological wonders in all of Asia.
A Brief History of Sigiriya
In 477 AD, King Kashyapa seized the throne from his father, King Dhatusena, and moved the capital from Anuradhapura to the impregnable rock fortress of Sigiriya. Over 18 years, he transformed the summit into a palace complex with gardens, pools, and the famous frescoes of the "Sigiriya Maidens." After Kashyapa's defeat in 495 AD, the site became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.

What to Expect When Climbing Sigiriya
The climb takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours at a comfortable pace. The route passes through the boulder gardens, the famous mirror wall, the fresco gallery (home to the celebrated paintings of celestial maidens), and the iconic Lion's Paw terrace — where two enormous carved lion paws flank the final staircase to the summit.
- Total steps: approximately 1,200 from base to summit
- Difficulty: Moderate — suitable for most fitness levels
- Best time to climb: Early morning (7:00 AM) to avoid heat and crowds
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours up, 45 minutes down
- Bring: Water, sunscreen, hat, comfortable shoes with grip
- Ticket price: $30 USD for foreign visitors (2025)
The Summit: What Awaits at the Top
At the summit, the ruins of Kashyapa's palace spread across 1.6 hectares. You'll find the royal swimming pool (still holding water after 1,500 years), the throne platform, and 360-degree panoramic views stretching to the distant hills of Kandy. On a clear morning, the sunrise from the top is unforgettable.
Our Sigiriya Ancient Kingdom tour includes a guided climb with a certified cultural guide who brings the history alive, plus visits to Dambulla Cave Temple and Minneriya for elephant gatherings.

For the best photograph of Sigiriya, head to Pidurangala Rock, just 20 minutes north. A shorter, more rugged climb rewards you with the iconic side-on view of Sigiriya rising from the jungle. Sunrise at Pidurangala is a bucket-list experience — arrive by 5:30 AM for the best light.

How to Include Sigiriya in Your Sri Lanka Itinerary
Sigiriya is located in the Cultural Triangle, roughly 4 hours from Colombo and 3 hours from Kandy. Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in the area, combining Sigiriya with Dambulla Cave Temple (30 minutes away) and a safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park for the famous elephant gathering (June–September).
Our Culture & Nature tour spends two full days in the Cultural Triangle, giving you time for both Sigiriya and Pidurangala, plus Dambulla, before heading to Kandy and the hill country.
